Deriving Value
This is usually what's it all about - deriving value from the data residing in the GIS. Once that data is in the GIS it can be used for example for asset reporting - how many left handed sprock widgets do I have and where are they? How long is my network of supply pipework and how much is it worth in total if a metre is worth £50?
Adding Value
Data in a GIS can be used for planning additions or modification to a network, for example. It can answer questions like "how can I best add a new cable route to the new housing estate being built using as much existing infrastructure as possible?"
Maintaining Value
A GIS can be used to provide management information - for example a dashboard can be set up showing how much new network has been added over the last month or what the current value of the linear network (cables, pipes etc) is.
