The Problem

The Utility Company embarked on a network wide data improvement programme and upgrade to their GIS (geographical information system).

Historically they maintained information on their network assets using a combination of vector data and scanned raster drawings that were held in GE Network Solutions Smallworld GIS.

The data improvement programme implements a schedule of data-migration from the Smallworld environment - using software & services from Intelliscan (as part of a total migration package provided by a number of specialist suppliers) into a fully vectorised form. The data was to be loaded and maintained in a new ArcGIS-based GIS providing them with group-wide access to the electronic records and functionality required to manage and develop its network.

The Solution

Intelliscan has a long standing involvement with this Telecom company and supplies software development services, production support and consultancy.

Intellliscan's SwERVE product has been used to provide a cost effective means of supplying data from the Smallworld environment to the company's field engineers.

Intelliscan also supplied their WARP positional accuracy software to facilitate the alignment of legacy map base for use in the Smallworld environment.

Working closely with the client, Intelliscan accumulated a very good understanding of the company's network data, enabling them to provide indepth assistance to investigate and trial various options for the migration of its raster records into a vector-based system. For instance, by providing recommendations and work package documents detailing key components and processes required to ensure the success of the data transformation programme.
